NASCAR's Most Penalized Drivers Updated (After 8 Races)

There have been several changes to Speeding In The Pits the past two days in order to improve the quality of this blog. A color key has been added in hopes of better understanding not only the penalties being assessed in each race, but the severity of each penalty. It is obvious that starting in the rear does not equate to a driver speeding entering the pits, nor is a driver entering the pits before it's open in order to prevent further damage to their car equate to the pit crew jumping over the wall too soon for a stop. All of the races from the 2011 season have been updated with the colors added and everything has been tabulated according to the various penalty types. In addition, total penalties have been tabulated as well and adjustments have been made in some cases due to previous errors in scoring. If you notice any errors in my math, please let me know.

I want to let everyone know that I sincerely appreciate you coming here and visiting. I am very surprised at the amount of hits the Speeding In The Pits blog has received since I started it up at the beginning of the season. Please continue to pass word of this place to others, as I would like it to be the one-stop place where everyone can go back and review all of the penalties that happen from race to race during the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season and in seasons beyond.

Most Penalized Drivers (After 8 Races)

Photo by Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images for NASCAR

Brian Vickers' wreck early in the Aaron's 499 forced him to the pits before they were open adding another penalty to his 2011 total. Meanwhile, an unusual set of curcumstances occurred for the 46 team. Prior to the event, the team was penalized to the rear of the field for unapproved adjustments to the car, not that it mattered since that was where the car was starting anyway. During a pit stop the team exchanged drivers, taking Bill Elliott out of the car he qualified and putting the regular driver, J.J. Yeley in the car. Later on in the event, Yeley's team was penalized for going over the wall too soon during a pit stop. In addition to that, Yeley was penalized for not heeding the prevous black flag penalty. This is the first occasion this season that two drivers have been penalized while driving the same car in the same race and the first time memory recalls this happening.
