Casey Mears was the beneficiary of rain Friday afternoon. Thanks to qualifying getting rained out and Mears having fastest time in the first practice session, the Geico Ford was able to start on the pole of Saturday Night's Irwin Tools Night Race At Bristol. Mears led the first 26 laps of the race but found misfortune in the late going when he hit the wall in turn two. Mears was able to continue to finish 21st, a lap off the leaders.

Race 24 - Irwin Tools Night Race At Bristol Penalties

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. looked to be competitive in Saturday Night's Irwin Tools Night Race At Bristol as the Kannapolis, North Carolina native led 13 laps near the 200 lap portion of the 500 lap race. This was after a lap 84 penalty handed down by NASCAR to Earnhardt for speeding exiting the pits. Unfortunately crew chief, Steve Letarte made the mistake of calling Earnhardt to the pits too early on a lap 347 stop which forced the Diet Mountain Dew car to restart at the rear of the field. Earnhardt finished the race in 12th position.

Like his Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jimmie Johnson had to start at the rear of Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Pure Michigan 400. Unlike his teammate, Johnson was forced to start at the rear due to a pre-race engine change while Earnhardt's penalty was due to a wreck in final practice. Johnson had one of the strongest cars in the field and looked poised to overcome starting at the rear to win the race. With only a handful of laps left, the engine on the 48 car soured knocking Johnson out of the lead and out of the race. Fortunately for the Lowe's Chevrolet driver, high attrition didn't drop him as far in the finishing order as other races as he was scored in 27th.
