A lap 29 incident in the Jeff Byrd 500 was triggered by Jeff Burton's suddenly slowing car. The resulting pile-up involved David Reutimann and Brian Vickers among others. As a result of having to make multiple pit stops under caution, both Reutimann and Vickers each violated NASCAR's pit rules twice moving them up to a tie for second among all drivers in total penalties for the season. David Gilliland added a penalty to his total in the event giving him a gap of two penalties over the three-way tie for second.
