2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series - Race 4 - Food City 500 Penalty Report

Sunday's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway got off to a horrendous start for Tony Stewart. The Indiana native cut a tire in the first 10 laps of the 500 lap race, spun and hit the wall. Stewart was forced behind the wall for repairs for more than 20 laps before returning to the track. To make matters worse, the 14 team was penalized for having too many crew members in contact with the pit service area. Stewart muscled through to finish a disappointing 31st.

Race 24 - Irwin Tools Night Race At Bristol Penalties

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. looked to be competitive in Saturday Night's Irwin Tools Night Race At Bristol as the Kannapolis, North Carolina native led 13 laps near the 200 lap portion of the 500 lap race. This was after a lap 84 penalty handed down by NASCAR to Earnhardt for speeding exiting the pits. Unfortunately crew chief, Steve Letarte made the mistake of calling Earnhardt to the pits too early on a lap 347 stop which forced the Diet Mountain Dew car to restart at the rear of the field. Earnhardt finished the race in 12th position.

Race 4 - Food City 500 Penalties

What looked to be a great finish went south in the late going of Sunday's Food City 500 for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and his National Guard, Diet Mountain Dew race team. Under the final caution for the event with less than 20 laps remaining, Earnhardt was caught speeding entering the pits. The penalty dropped Earnhardt out of the top 10 and the Kannapolis, North Carolina driver was unable to make up any ground in the final handful of laps. The misfortune was capped off with a flat tire in the final two laps of the event dropping Earnhardt from 14th to a 15th place finish.
