2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series - Race 2 - Subway Fresh Fit 500 Penalty Report

Photo By Justin Edmonds/Getty Images for NASCAR

It was a rough day for Kyle Busch and his M&M's/Joe Gibbs Racing team.  Prior to the race, the 18 team was forced to change their car's engine forcing their driver to start the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at the rear of the field instead of where they had qualified, fourth.  Busch was on his way to the front until he spun on lap 49 and hit the wall.  The rest of the event proved to be a struggle for both driver and team and even after getting back on the lead lap in the race's latter stages, Busch found trouble again while trying to avoid running into his older brother, Kurt.  At the checkered flag, Busch crossed the line 23rd, the final car on the lead lap.

Race 15 - Quicken Loans 400 Penalties

Photo by John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR

After a week away from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, many thought Kurt Busch would return to the series with a fresh start for the rest of the 2012 season. Unfortunately, things quickly turned sour for Busch just after the drop of the initial green flag. Busch spun and tagged the wall off turn two taking away any chance of having a decent finish in the Quicken Loans 400 at the Michigan International Speedway. Busch spun for a second time later in the race and ended up crossing the line in 30th, six laps off the lead lap pace.

Race 5 - Auto Club 400 Penalties

Photo by Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images for NASCAR

Sunday's Auto Club 400 at the Auto Club Speedway was a race to forget for Jeff Gordon. Gordon's DuPont Chevrolet looked to be one of the contenders for the win in the first half of the race as Gordon had spent the majority of it in the top five. Unfortunately, things got bad in a hurry for the 24 car. While leaving his pits during a scheduled green flag pit stop on lap 107, Gordon's fuel man was dragged out of the pit box with his fuel can forcing Gordon to serve a stop and go penalty. The day ended up being even more frustrating as Gordon's crew again cost their driver in the pits with a tire violation during the race's only caution flag. Gordon had no chance to make up for the miscues as rain came and eventually forced NASCAR to call the event short of the scheduled distance. The DuPont Chevrolet was scored as finishing 26th, the last car on the lead lap.

NASCAR's Most Penalized Drivers (After Race 3)

Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images for NASCAR

Through pit strategy, Brad Keselowski was able to overcome an early penalty for speeding in the pits to leading Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately for the Miller Lite Dodge team, fuel issues knocked the 2 car off the lead lap relegating Keselowski to a 32nd place finish, 8 laps behind the leaders.

After starting only one event in 2010, Ken Schrader returned to NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series seven times in 2011. All of Schrader's starts were for Frank Stoddard's team early in the season. After missing the fourth race of the season at Bristol, Schrader qualified in the seven other events he attempted during the year.

Schrader's two best finishes on the circuit came at the half mile paperclip in Martinsville, Virginia. Schrader finished 22nd in the Spring event while scoring his season best of 21st in the second race in he Fall. Schrader's other five finishes in 2011 were 33rd in the Auto Club 400, 33rd in the Samsung Mobile 500, 32nd in the Crown Royal Presents the Matthew And Daniel Hansen 400, 28th in the Showtime Southern 500 and 30th in the Pure Michigan 400.
