David Gilliland led all NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers with five pre-race penalties in the 2012 season.  Next closest to Gilliland were Jeff Burton, Sam Hornish, Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Travis Kvapil who tied with three pre-race penalties.  Gilliland's penalties came in the season opening race, the Daytona 500, the first race of the year at Talladega, the Sonoma event and the second races at Dover and Charlotte.

Landon Cassill's BK Racing crew did something that no other team had done previously during the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.  Cassill's Burger King Toyota was forced to start at the tail of the field three times in Sunday's AAA Texas 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway.  Cassill finished the race 26th, two laps off the lead lap after starting the race in 41st position.

Race 31 - Bank Of America 500 Penalties

Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bank Of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway proved to be a penalty-laden affair.  Prior to the drop of the green flag, six drivers had to start at the rear of the 43-car starting field due to engine or transmission changes.  The 334-lap event proved to be a long night for Paul Menard and the Menard's/Pittsburgh Paints Chevrolet team.  After a lap 37 spin in turn four, Menard's crew was penalized for two infractions, one for going over the wall too soon and another for too many crew members over the wall.  Later in the race, the Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing driver was caught speeding entering the pits on lap 215 resulting in a pass thru penalty.  Menard ended the race a disappointing 27th, six laps off the lead lap.

Race 25 - Advocare 500 Penalties

Sunday Night's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Advocare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway started off promising for Aric Almirola. Hopes for the 43 team had to be high going into the race as the Florida driver's Ford was emblazoned with the same sponsor as the event. Unfortunately, things did not go so well for the Richard Petty Motorsports team. After starting 13th, Almirola's car began smoking on lap 39 forcing the driver off the track for several laps. The Advocare team was able to make repairs and salvage points but their driver ended up being caught by NASCAR for speeding entering the pits twice, first during a green flag stop then another while trying to serve the initial penalty. Almirola finished 32nd, 30 laps off the lead lap.

Race 16 - Toyota/Save Mart 350 Penalties

Juan Pablo Montoya was a heavy favorite going into Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma and was running solidly in the top 10 in the first portion of the first road course race for the season. However, the Target Chevrolet driver began developing electrical issues that eventually knocked him out of the top 10 and off the lead lap altogether. Montoya ended the event in the 34th place position, three laps behind the race winner, Clint Bowyer.

Sunday's FedEx 400 at Dover International Speedway proved to be a rough race for 2004 Nextel Sprint Cup champion, Kurt Busch. Busch started his Phoenix Construction Services Chevrolet a solid ninth place but struggled with his car's handling from the drop of the green flag. The day got worse when NASCAR caught Busch speeding twice in the event. In the closing stages, Busch's engine failed relegating him to a disappointing 24th place finish.

Race 6 - Goody's Fast Relief 500 Penalties

Things looked bleak for Ryan Newman in the first half of Sunday's Goody's Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway. NASCAR caught Newman speeding entering the pits during a lap 100 stop under caution. The subsequent penalty at the tail end of the field cost the Outback Steakhouse Chevrolet team track position and eventually a lap to the race leaders. Newman was able to get the free pass when Juan Pablo Montoya hit the wall and received further good fortune in the closing stages when David Reutimann stopped on the track bringing out the caution flag. Newman was able to snake his way through the race's final caution when leaders Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson tangled and hold off A.J. Allmendinger in the green, white checkered finish.

Las Vegas proved to be a major test for five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, Jimmie Johnson and his Lowe's Chevrolet crew. A strong sixth place qualifying effort was nullified by a crash in practice, forcing the 48 team to start at the rear of Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400. The poor starting position did not prevent Johnson and his team from having a good day as they were able to overcome the penalty to lead 35 laps and finish a strong second place to the winner, Tony Stewart.

2011 Year In Review: Juan Pablo Montoya's Penalties

Bogota, Columbia's Juan Pablo Montoya entered his fifth full season in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series in 2011 expecting to contend for wins and a spot in the Chase. Unfortunately neither goal was met for the Target driver as Montoya spent most of the season as an also-ran.

Montoya started the season with four top 10 finishes in the first eight races of the season. However in the next 28 events, Montoya would only score four other top 10 runs. After the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire, car owner fired crew chief Brian Pattie and installed James Pohlman as Montoya's new head wrench. Still, 2011 had some good moments for the #42 Earnhardt Ganassi Racing machine. Montoya notched two poles at Auto Club Speedway and at Richmond International Raceway. In addition, Montoya finished every race on the Sprint Cup schedule and completed 99.5% of all the laps ran, only 48 shore of the perfect mark.

Things were relativly quiet on the penalty side of things. Montoya was caught speeding only four times all year while his Target pit crew only cost him on one occasion for not having all the lug nuts on a wheel during a stop.

Most Penalized Drivers In 2011 - Pit Road Closed Penalties

The fourth and final category featured on this blog is undoubtedly the most straight forward and simple categories. It is also the best indicator of what drivers and teams have had the most problems in the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. The Pits Closed Penalty lists drivers who have had to pit before the pits are open due to damaged sustained in a wreck, or a part failure that's forced them to go to the pits or the garage area. This category does not include penalties for drivers who are laps down and enter the pits when the pits are open only for the leaders as that is considered to be a driver penalty.

David Gilliland lead all drivers in 2011 with 16 penalties in this category. Bobby Labonte was second with 14 penalties while Brian Vickers, Juan Pablo Montoya and Trevor Bayne tied for third with 10. It should be noted that the highest finishing driver in the points among those listed here was Montoya who finished 21st. There was only one driver who attempted to start all 36 events and was not a start and park team. That driver was the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, Tony Stewart. Stewart's title rival, Carl Edwards tied Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton with only three penalties.
