Race 35 - Advocare 500 Penalties

Sunday's Advocare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway was a rather ho hum event for the first 200 laps.  Things changed on lap 236 when NASCAR Sprint Cup championship leader, Jimmie Johnson found misfortune in a flat tire and a visit to the turn four wall.  The latter stages of the 500-kilometer race proved to be even more shocking.  Jeff Gordon gained retaliation on Clint Bowyer after contact that resulted in Gordon meeting the wall.  Unfortunately, Joey Logano and Aric Almirola were also involved in the incident.

2011 Year In Review: Mike Bliss' Penalties

Mike Bliss was focused on running full-time in NASCAR's Nationwide Series for 2011, without any expectations of running in NASCAR's premiere division, the Sprint Cup season. Plans changed after the 10th event of the year at Darlington as Bliss was called in to drive for Frank Stoddard's fledgling team.

Bliss started 18 Sprint Cup events in 2011, exactly half of the races on the series' docket. Bliss' first priority was to drive Mark Smith's #19 Nationwide car and Bliss did not drive Stoddard's #32 Ford in Sprint Cup races that conflicted with Nationwide races. Bliss' best finish driving the 32 car was 25th on two occasions, at Dover in the FedEx 400 and Chicagoland in the Geico 400. Bliss' best finish of 21st came in the season finale at Homestead in his only race of the season driving Kevin Buckler's TRG Motorsports Ford.

Bliss was black flagged four times in 2011 by NASCAR for speeding in pit road. He also received a penalty for a commitment line violation in the Brickyard 400. The 32 crew did a great job the times Bliss drove for them as they did not receive a penalty all year long.

Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images for NASCAR

Sunday's Ford 400 wasn't the kind of day that 5-time NASCAR Cup champion, Jimmie Johnson hoped for. Besides having to give up his championship crown to eventual race winner and champion, Tony Stewart, the season finale was a struggle for the #48 Lowe's Chevrolet. Johnson struggled with carburetor problems, was involved in a spin just past the halfway point and had to serve a one-lap penalty for running the stop and go sign.

Race 14 - 5-Hour Energy 500 Penalties

Photo by Jason Smith/Getty Images for NASCAR

The 5-Hour Energy 500 at Pocono proved to be a fairly quiet race as far as pit road penalties go. Unfortunately for two drivers, Brian Vickers and Casey Mears, they both had two penalties in the pits on the day. It had to be especially upsetting for Vickers as his penalties came back-to-back. Vickers initally had to serve a penalty for speeding in pit road. After serving that penalty, he was called back into the pits to serve the same penalty again as he had sped again.

Penalty Report / Infraction Sheet - Pocono:

Car#, Lap, Infraction, Flag, Penalty, Lap Assessed
#27 Paul Menard, 48 Speed-Exiting pits G Pass Thru 49
#83 Brian Vickers, 93 Speed-Exiting pits G Pass Thru 95
